Retroactive Withdrawal Procedures Graduate students may request a withdrawal from all classes any time between the first and last day of classes for the semester. The letter should be included with the dissertation at the time of submission. Some graduate programs have a foreign language requirement for the Doctor of Philosophy degree. As a condition of graduation, each student’s thesis or dissertation must be published.

Permission to conduct a remote-participation defense must be obtained by the dissertation chair dissertatioh the Graduate School in advance. Such rights entitle the University of Maryland to reproduce, archive, and distribute dissertations, in whole or in part, in and from an electronic format, as it sees fit.

All such materials must be produced in standard dissertation format. Advisors and programs have the right to deny a request for an equivalency review. In exceptional cases, in which a student is able to defend the dissertation before completing 12 credits ofthis requirement can be satisfied by completing a combined total of 12 credits of pre-candidacy dissertation research and The Commithee of Education will request graduates to file an exit survey.

A student must be admitted to candidacy for the doctorate within five years after admission to the doctoral program. In making this request, the chair must indicate in writing that he or she has read the rules for a remote defense listed below.

The Graduate School has established the following procedures for the conduct of the doctoral dissertation examination. Doctoral candidates are automatically registered for six 6 credits of Doctoral Dissertation Researchfor which they pay the flat candidacy tuition.
